MARK YOU CALENDARS AND MAKE YOUR RESERVATIONS NOW!!!

The Foundry Association of Michigan presents
THE 2006 ELECTION AND BEYOND

October 19, 2006
10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Michigan Chamber of Commerce
Lansing

We all are hearing the sound bites, seeing the TV clips and being bombarded with communications leading up to the November election. Races from the US Senate to your local Township Trustee are all trying to get the attention of voters. “Vote for Me” seems to be the battle cry…and the intensity will increase over the next month and a half.

In an effort to sort it all out, FAM is presenting a special program ranging from why campaigns are important for setting public policy, to major state issues of interest to the business community, to insight on what to expect on November 7th, and beyond.

Mark your calendars and make your reservations now!

The Program:

“Campaigns; How public policy gets from your door to the Governor’s desk, and what you can do about it,” by Suzanne Miller Allen.

Suzanne is a highly respected political activist in Lansing. She holds two degrees from Wayne State (BA and MA) and a degree in Communications from Michigan State University. Suzanne now works for the Sterling Corporation, a political and communications consulting firm in Lansing. She served for 10 years of the Chief of Staff to Senate Majority Leader Ken Sikkema.

A unique element in Suzanne’s resume is that she has served as Chief of Staff to both the Senate Majority Leader and the Speaker of the House…an distinction not held by any other person in Michigan History, much less by a woman (she noted to us!)

In her spare time Suzanne tends to her two daughters and keeps husband Senator Jason Allen, on track.

We are please to have Suzanne and the opportunity her presentation will give FAM members to better understand how all the pieces of politics fit together.

LEGISLATIVE PERSPECTIVES; BIPARTISAN AND BICAMERAL VIEWS

We are pleased two legislative leaders have agreed to join us and add their thoughts on issues and the upcoming elections.

House Minority Leader Diane Byrum is a political veteran from immediately south of Lansing, and has represented area voters as a county commissioner, State Senator and twice as State Representative. As the Minority Leader, she is called upon to use her considerable skills to further the Governor’s legislative agenda, which can be a challenge in a legislature dominated by the opposite party. Byrum will share with us her views on current issues, as well as comments on hotly contested races.

State Senator Nancy Cassis is from Novi, and is completing her first term in the State Senate. She contemplated a run for Governor this year, but is seeking reelection instead. If she continues as Chair of the Senate Finance Committee, she will be a major force in revising the state business tax structure during the next two years. Regardless, as a senior Senator, she will be able to exert influence on a wide range of state policies.

Keynote speaker: William S. Ballenger III

Much has been said about Bill Ballenger over the years. He has been dubbed by the Detroit News as "Michigan's undisputed Crown Prince of Pundits." In addition to editing and publishing the "Inside Michigan Politics" newsletter, he appears frequently on radio and television nationally & throughout Michigan. Ballenger can speak with authority, having been elected to the Michigan House of Representatives and State Senate, as well as serving in the Executive Branch of government. His four decades of experience in government provide him with diverse experiences and insights, making Bill a highly regarded political commentator.

Bill will be giving his insight on the elections in his presentation: Campaign 2006; What Will Happen?

Government Affairs Update: William R. Lievense

Bill Lievense is FAM’s Government Relations advisor and President of The Capitol Group in Ada, Michigan. He produces a monthly update for FAM members, and today will review developments and answer questions of special interest to foundries.

Environmental Affairs Developments: Dan Oman

Dan is chair of the FAM Environment Committee and consultant with RMT, Inc. of Ann Arbor. Highlighting Dan’s briefing will be developments on “Subpart uuu”, and other national and state issues.
